“Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.” Shinichi Suzuki

Grade 5

Grovecrest fifth-grade students expand their musical knowledge as they learn how to play the recorder. They discover music theory and harmonizing as they play songs, duets and rounds in the classroom.

For Volunteers
Thank you for taking the time to teach our 5th graders!  You will be teaching recorders in the classroom for 30 minutes per week during an 8-week semester. Work with your teacher to find a time suitable for both of you.

Don't worry if you don't have any experience teaching recorders, it's fun and easy for any beginner to pick up.  Most teachers prefer to keep the recorders in the classroom, and teaching in the classroom also allows for greatest flexibility with schedules. You will be teaching from the "Nine-Note Recorder Method" book, which has clear and simple lessons to follow.  Once your class has the basics down, you can choose from a variety of songs and duets to have them practice.

We will be using your teacher’s classroom Elmo (projects the page directly from the book up onto a screen) to reduce the amount of books we would need to purchase.  If you think that this won't work for your class, please let me know and we can work something else out. If you would like your class to perform at an assembly, talk to your teacher to determine if this is something they are comfortable with.

You will need to check out your “Nine-Note Recorder” book from Janna Hubert (801-785-2311), which you can take home to study, but you will need to return at the end of the semester.  We have had many books go missing over the years, and this is the best way to keep costs down.
