“Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.” Shinichi Suzuki

Grade 1

Students at Grovecrest begin their musical journey in the 1st grade classroom with music lessons focused on introducing instruments, composers, and basic music concepts, all while having a lot of fun singing and moving to music.

For Volunteers
Thank you so much for volunteering to help with our wonderful first graders!  As a volunteer, you will be doing 8 lessons for 30 minutes each lesson in the classroom.  Please coordinate with your 1st grade teacher to find a schedule that works well for both of you.  Some teachers prefer monthly lessons throughout the year and others prefer a once a week schedule for 8 weeks. The goal is to bring joy and learning into the classroom on a consistent basis for all students, and we appreciate you giving your time and talents!

What do I use to teach with?
You will be teaching 8 lessons found in your 1st Grade Binder, along with activities from the book"101 Instrument Activites".  You can also find other fun ideas from visiting the links below or add some of your own. Scroll down this page for tutorials on teaching your First Grade lessons. Thanks to one of our fabulous volunteers, Nedra Snyder,  for teaching the tutorials!

You don't need to do anything extravagant, simple lessons are sometimes the most effective with this age group, so have fun with it! You may check out your 1st Grade Binder & copy of "101 Rhythm Instrument Activities" from Janna Hubert, but these must be returned at the end of the school year to her.  (She will track you down!) Call 801-785-2311 or email jannahubert@yahoo.com to obtain your volunteer copy of the book.

Where do I find the instruments to help teach the lessons?
Instruments to aid your lessons are found on the book shelf in the Art Supplies room (by the Teacher's Lounge).  Please do not remove these from the school.  These must be returned to the shelf so that other Kindergarten and First Grade classes may use them.

 Instruments Available:
150 sandblocks
50 rhythm sticks (2 sets)
29 "soft" kitten sticks
32 "loud" lion sticks
60 blue & pink scarves
37 stick jingle bells
36 egg shakers (2 sets of each)
31 bat puppets

Classroom Help Suggestions:
  • Give clear boundaries and expectations before starting the song activity.  Make sure they understand proper use of the instruments you use during the song.
  • Try to allow for as many children as possible to have a turn. They LOVE having something to hold in their hands.
  • Give them time to talk about their interests and experiences with music.
